Why have I not been motivated to post?
It dawned on me, when Jesse Woodrow (thanks for the push to blog, Jesse!) emailed me asking why I haven't written, that I am in funk. After working so hard on the OUTLAW series, it was canceled. When I finished up ABDUCTION, I was thinking I was going to be starting work on two movies, and then they didn't happen. Then a director I admire, one whose last movie I cast, went with another casting director without so much as a fight to get me on it instead. I guess disheartened is the word. Discouraged.
But we're the artists, and along with that comes the invariable ups and downs of leading a creative life. A part of me understands that without a doubt I'm one of the lucky ones: I'm working on a cool horror movie right now, THE COLLECTION, with a director and with producers who rock. I have several other movies in the works. But I just can't shake this cloud of anxiety.
So I'm sharing this really to say, "It seemed so important at the time." In other words, we have two great holidays ahead of us. Let's breathe, regroup, take advantage of the quiet time, revel in the existence of our family and friends.
In the meantime, I'm flying to Atlanta to hold casting sessions since THE COLLECTOR is filming there this January. So if you live near Atlanta do email me to see is there's a part for you.
Thanks for listening.

Hey Joseph,
ReplyDeletethis is David from one of your AIPA workshops in Sydney. You have done sooo many more movies since then...wow! I wish I could say the same, but I just finished high school and now keen to take my acting career more seriously. I'll be applying for some acting schools down here in Australia (full-time 3 year course), and then planning to make the move to the states. I can't wait to hopefully get in touch when I'm down there...I've never been, so can't wait!
Keep in touch,
David from down under :)
A couple of my manager's clients were on Outlaw, boo that it got canceled! You are on a fun project now, I can't wait to see the neat amazing movie that finds you.
ReplyDeleteWhich brings up a couple questions: What makes a project stand out for you? Can you tell right away if it's going to be special or do you get surprised since you work in the pre-production process?
Thanks for the update! Definitely understand the funk. I think everyone in any type of creative space has a career that will inevitably go in cycles...Hope to hear more in the new year. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to me to read that you share in the same feeling that I as an actor might feel in getting passed by in casting. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSo great to have you back!!!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteDid another workshop with AIPA. Can't believe it has been a whole year since I did the workshop with you.
Time heals all wounds they say.....and the learning experiences along the way make up for the shit!
Hi!! I found this blog when I was googling your address to mail you a card (which you'll probably get after the holidays). It's wonderful and quite moving to hear your thoughts and perspective. I couldn't agree more. Anyway, I have no idea if you would even remember me, but I hope so... we met a whole bunch of times back in the day, ages ago, when I was acting... I took a super long break and am wanting to get back out there now. When you get the card, the pic might jog your memory. :) I put my email in there too. I would really appreciate a chance to reconnect in the New Year. I could use your two cents on exactly how I'm going to venture down this road again! Great to see what amazing credits you've amassed in the years since I knew you. Have beautiful Happy Holidays!!! Hope to talk to you soon. ~ Sara Melson (now married, so actually, Sara Webb!)...
ReplyDeletePlease keep the updates coming!~ Very informative!
